Noah vs Tyreek Ends in Disappointment

June 18, 2025 | Edition #144

👋 Hey, Speedsters!

This week has been like a bitter pill to swallow… Just when we were getting over Grand Slam Track’s cancellation, another gripping race just got called off! A chance to spot Noah Lyles blaze down the track has slipped away, and a collegiate track and field program suffered a massive blow! But amid all these upsets, a legend’s world record story continues to warm hearts even 40 years later! So let’s dive in!

Wait Continues for the Noah vs Tyreek Showdown!

Imagine New York's Times Square being shut down for a sprint showdown! Well, this is exactly what Noah Lyles planned: the billboards, the hype… for his most anticipated race against NFL star Tyreek Hill! This was going to be a golden opportunity to skyrocket the sport's viewership. But…

On June 16, Noah Lyles declared that the face-off, which was supposed to happen this week, had to be called off due to "complications, personal reasons." He said, "We were very deep into creating the event..." Watch Lyles talk about what went wrong here! And yes, it does sting! After all this race was going to crown the ultimate sprint king, that too, after a year of taking digs!

Be it arguments about the race distance or just trash talk, Noah and Tyreek's online feud turned this into a much-anticipated battle. Remember how Lyles stirred the pot after his 60m win at the New Balance Indoor GP earlier this year, holding a sign which read, “Tyreek could never?" Hill clapped back too, flashing "Noah could never" after his 100m race this week. In case you missed it, here's a refresher of Tyreek’s latest sprint. But when it was time to actually settle scores…

They dropped it! A big bummer! After all, Noah is the face of track. And when someone steps up claiming to be faster than him? That needs to be put to rest. But now, with the World Champs coming in July, Lyles doesn’t really have time to mess around. Also, NFL training camps begin in July, too. So, this ain't really happening, at least for the time being!

Is It the Start of Downfall?

Washington State University just dropped a shocker, shattering 30 dreams in a blink! In a drastic call, they are now ending all support for field events in their T&F program. Yeah, no jumps, no throws going forward. If that's not enough, they are also putting a limit on the sprint and hurdle events. This means, iconic sprint races like Mason Lawyer's 100m, where he broke into the nation’s top 10 fastest times this year, might no longer happen.....Here, just see the talent WSU is about to limit!

The college is adopting "a distance-focused approach." This means cross-country and distance races will be all they'll give attention to. And their reasoning: “This change gives the WSU Track & Field program the best opportunity to remain competitive,” in distance events. And the impacted athletes? They either stay and WSU honors their scholarships, or they transfer. But such a crisis didn’t come from nowhere…

Since April, WSU has been facing serious financial difficulties. They have had budget cuts due to a lack of federal grants, state budget deficit, and dropping enrollment. Also, the Academic units were told to prepare for rough waters ahead. And now, their track and field programs are under the heat. Needless to say, this is a heavy blow to collegiate track and field!

The Jump, Which Entered Books and Memories

Exactly 4 decades and 2 days ago, on the evening of June 16, 1985, William aka Willie Banks pulled off a spectacle. Before his second jump for the night, he told three people around him: I am going to break the world record. What happened next was miraculous....

Manifestation worked... Willie Banks leaped to a 17.97m mark, breaking the then 10-year-old triple jump world record by João Carlos de Oliveira by a whole 8 centimetres! Here, watch how William created history! Today, to honor him and his WR, the singlet and bib he wore that night, along with a bag of sand from that very pit, are proudly displayed in the Museum of World Athletics. And now?

Well, he's out there living his life, but it hasn't been easy! In 2022, Willie said, "When I first got started, there was nothing." Back then, he was living out of his car and had to work beyond the sport to survive. Today’s athletes have agents, managers, and endorsement deals, but Banks and his peers had to start a trust fund, pooling whatever little they had, just to afford competing in the Olympics. Well, the pain of not getting the right aid on time hurts....Retirement doesn’t always come in easy too. So yes, it’s been a bittersweet ride for Willie Banks!
